LOCAL groups are set to get together to liven up the rail platform at Galashiels with eye catching floral displays.
The move comes after Galashiels Community Council, Gala in Bloom and the Rotary Club of Galashiels and District were given permission to adopt the platform by Scotrail.
Speaking to the Border Telegraph, Community Council secretary Tracey Alder said:“The rail platform is the first thing visitors see when they arrive, so we want to create a memorable first impression.
“This is a great opportunity to liven up the area with new planters full of lovely plants and make it look very welcoming for visitors to the town.”
Owing to the conditions laid out by Scotrail, planters can only be attached to the railings at the station. These are expected to cost over £3000 in total, and the aim is to have 12 dotted along the length of the platform. Head of Galashiels Community Council Judith Cleghorn has been busy heading up a fundraising drive to make the ambitious plan a reality.
The Focus Centre/ Live Borders have given £1000. Scotrail have pledged a donation of £500, Rotary have committed £150 and various other organisations have been contacted to see if they can help out with donations towards the cost.
Judith Cleghorn said: “When I approached the Focus Committee I didn't expect such a generous amount. We owe them and everyone else who has donated so far a huge thanks. There are few more cheques to come in but we are still short of our target.
“Tesco have been very kind and allowed Gala in Bloom to have two collection days last weekend and we hope that the public will be generous and help us reach our goal with further donations.
“This will be a busy spring and summer in Galashiels, and it is vital we make that first impression for visitors count.”
