THE Met Office has issued a Yellow (Be Aware) weather warning for the Scottish Borders, with localised heavy rain likely to cause disruption this afternoon and during the evening.
Thundery showers are spreading northwards and are forecasted to affect the area from around 2pm, continuing until around 10pm.
The eastern Scottish Borders is likely to see the most intense thunderstorms, but due to the very localised nature not all areas will be affected. The Jedburgh area may also be affected this afternoon.
As well as the potential for torrential rain, gusty winds, large hail and lightning could affect the area. Localised flash flooding and surface water flooding are possible.
Up to 20mm of rain may fall in just one hour where downpours occur, with the potential for 30-40mm over a six hour period for some isolated areas.
Jim Fraser, Scottish Borders Council’s Emergency Planning Officer, said: “This afternoon and throughout the evening we are expecting thunderstorms to move into the area.
“This could result in very sudden changes in weather conditions and where downpours occur there may be disruption. Unfortunately these are expected to be worst when the roads will be busiest, at school run time and early evening.
“Drivers should take care, particularly during and after downpours, and should be prepared for large puddles and always drive to the conditions.”
