THE Liberal Democrats have selected a parliamentary candidate – in case a snap general election is called.
The party has picked Jenny Marr to stand for the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk constituency, following uncertainty over Brexit.
The former Selkirk High pupil was chosen at a meeting in Melrose last week.
She told us: "I’m thrilled to have been chosen to represent my home constituency.
"Growing up in the Borders I always felt that the Liberal Democrats put my community first in everything they did and I want to bring that sort of public service and commitment back to Borders politics on the big stage and here at home.
"On the national stage I want to be the pro-UK and pro-EU voice that reflects the dominant view here.
"And at home, I don’t pretend to have a magic wand, but if there’s a street light needing fixed, a pothole needing filled or a Government policy hurting you or your community, tell me.
"If you’re fed up of a lack of Selkirk bypass or of Melrose being without a bank, tell me.
"Working for the party’s health spokesperson, I see on a daily basis the problems facing our NHS, particularly within mental health services, and work with residents to ensure they get the care they need.
"Fear and grievance are causing so much division in our politics, but I believe it’s a force for good and I intend to make sure that’s the case in the Borders."
Jenny has worked in both the oil industry and the third sector, after graduating with a degree in politics and international relations from Aberdeen University.
Lib Dem leader on Scottish Borders Council councillor Kris Chapman added: “I could not be more delighted Jenny has been selected to fight for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk.
“I’ve worked with Jenny for nearly ten years, and in everything she’s done she’s always put people first.
“In recent times it’s been difficult to see the heart in politics, but that’s what Jenny will bring.”
