UPDATE - February 10, 2021 - 5.32pm - Scottish Borders Council has confirmed the A72 is open again, but people are being reminded they should only be travelling if essential.

OVERNIGHT snow has caused a major Borders road to close and some school bus services to be cancelled, Scottish Borders Council warns.

The A72 at Dirtpot Corner, between Peebles and Innerleithen, is shut and diversions are in place.

The council says Police Scotland are working to clear the route, but drivers are asked to avoid the area wherever possible until that has been done.

Normal alternative routes via Cardrona and Traquair are not passable and traffic is being diverted eastbound via the A703, A6094, B6392 and A7 and westbound in the reverse.

A number of school bus services have also been cancelled today (Wednesday, February 10).

They include the XE600, XB604, P14, B20, B13, B06, B07, ZB02, B23, B28, XG600, XG601, XG603, XG604, XG608, XG611, XH604, XE617, XE618, S15, E01, XE614, XB605, H02, H19, P08, P30 and P31.

A yellow warning remains in place for the whole of the Borders until 11.59pm today.

More snow is expected throughout today as part of frequent and persistent showers, particularly in the central and northern parts of the region.

Jim Fraser, the council's emergency planning officer, said: “In line with the weather warnings for snow a number of areas of the Borders have been affected overnight, with 10cm and above falling in places.

“The Met Office is continuing to forecasting more persistent snow showers across some areas today.

"We would urge people to only travel if their journey is essential – in line with current COVID-19 restrictions.

“Our snow ploughs and gritters are out clearing our primary road network and will move on to the secondary routes as and when conditions and resources allow.”
