TRIBUTES have been paid to a Borders chip shop owner, following his death from coronavirus.

Alfonso Crolla, who ran Alfonso's in Earlston, died last Tuesday (February 16), the High Street takeaway announced on its social media page.

The post, published on Wednesday (February 17), reads: "It is with great sadness that we write to inform you that yesterday, Alfonso lost his battle with COVID.

"He was the heart and soul of our family and the chip shop and will be deeply missed.

"As you understand we need time to grieve and so the shop will remain closed until further notice.

"Thanks again for your support. From all the team at Alfonso's."

Tributes were also paid by Facebook users, who left hundreds of comments.

One wrote: "So very sorry for your loss he was a true legend and one of the nicest person you could ever meet. Our love and thoughts go out to you all."

Another added: "Can't quite believe that the friendliest best chip shop gentleman is no longer with us. Sad day for [Earlston]. Thoughts are with his family."

A third posted: "So sorry to hear this news. I grew up regularly seeing Alfonso and the team. A great man and always so welcoming with my family and especially my grandparents."
