THE Borders has the lowest rate of coronavirus cases in the UK, according to data released by the UK Government.

Figures published yesterday (Saturday, March 27), show the number of new cases per 100,000 population in each council area between March 16-22.

In that period, the Borders recorded four new cases, giving the region a rate of 3.5 per 100,000 - which is the best rate in the UK.

The second-place spot is occupied by Ceredigion, in Wales, which recorded three cases (rate of 4.1), with the Cotswold District Council area in joint-third place (four cases; rate of 4.5) alongside the Orkney Islands (one cases; rate of 4.5).

At the other end of the table, West Lothian has the highest rate of cases (209.7), having recorded 384 cases over the seven-day period.

Meanwhile, the latest figures released by the Scottish Government - which are more up to date than those issued by the UK Government - show the Borders’ rate has improved further.

In the period between March 18-24, the Borders recorded two new cases - giving a rate of 1.7 new cases per 100,000.
