PLANS to build the new Galashiels Academy have taken a step forward today (Thursday, May 13).
At a meeting, elected members agreed to take forward Scottish Borders Council's preferred site option for the new £55 million community campus.
For months campaigners have been voicing concerns over 'Option 3', which includes building in part of Scott Park.
The meeting of the full council was told that 72 negative comments were recorded opposing the proposed site during the informal consultation period.
But a report to members stated "there is widespread support amongst the school community and the wider silent majority for the project".
During today's meeting, Galashiels councillor Euan Jardine, of the Conservatives, said the new facilities were a "once in a generation opportunity".
Sandy Aitchison, an independent councillor for the town, added he was "looking forward immensely" to seeing a new campus being built.
