NHS Borders has urged people in the region to make “safer choices” after 132 cases of coronavirus were recorded across a 48-hour period.
The Scottish Government published updated figures at 2pm today (Wednesday, June 23) showing that the Borders recorded 71 cases during the last day.
According to the data, the previous 24 hours saw 61 cases of coronavirus in the region.

On the rise in cases, NHS Borders’ consultant in public health, Chris Allan, said: “It is human nature to be excited as summer gets into full swing with school holidays, sporting events and the chance to finally catch up with family and friends, especially when we may be marking dates that are traditionally associated with occasions like Common Ridings.
“However the rise of cases in such a short time acts as a very real reminder that COVID-19 is present in the Borders and is highly transmissible. The First Minister was clear that we could see a number of deaths from COVID-19 in the coming weeks.”
The total number of cases in the Borders since the start of the pandemic now stands at 3,280 following the latest rise.
According to the government figures, there still remain fewer than five people in hospital in the Borders with recently confirmed cases of the virus.

Dr Allan added: “While we want you to enjoy the summer and the freedoms that the restrictions allow us, it is vital that you consider the risks and benefits that come with your decisions.
“When you mix with others there is a potential to catch or pass on COVID-19: be this at work, when out shopping or in social settings. This is more likely now with the new Delta variant that is in circulation.
“Please make safer choices by considering things like how many people you are mixing with and the circumstances around these occasions – for example meet outdoors and in smaller groups whenever possible. It is crucial that we all continue to stick to the rules and follow the FACTS.
“We know that the vaccine is safe and has a positive impact on hospital admissions, reducing transmission and the severity of illness. So please protect yourself and your loved ones by coming forward to get vaccinated when it is your turn, including when it is time for your second dose to ensure that you have greater protection against COVID-19.”
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced this week that the easing of lockdown restrictions would be paused, with the Borders staying in Level 1 until at least July 19.
However, it is hoped that Scotland will lift all remaining restrictions on August 9, Ms Sturgeon said.
