A BORDERS station house has received a new plaque to commemorate its history.
Last week the new sign, presented by Andy Savage MBE of the Railway Heritage Trust, was unveiled at the Station House, Stow, by four members of village’s Community Trust.
Vice-chairwoman Grace Murray told the Border Telegraph that receiving the plaque was in honour of those who had worked for years to develop the station.
She said: “We’re proud of everybody. People spent years and years working on this, a huge amount of effort went in to save the building and to make a business case.
“They had to convince others of their vision [for the station house].”

At one time there were plans to demolish the building, however, Grace says that locals were instrumental in saving the village’s heritage.
She said: “Local folk kept it [Station House] alive.”
Stow station first opened in 1848 as part of the Waverley Route to Carlisle.
However, the station closed in 1969 and became a private home.
Since 2019, it has been restored and now features a bar/bistro and will have a cycle hub on site too.
Members of Stow Community Trust hope that the new, modern station house will help attract visitors to the village, to take in the sites, and even help locals enjoy what’s on their doorstep.
“We’re pretty certain the community will love it,” said Grace. “It’s so lovely inside, we managed to get some old signs from the old railway.
“We’ve got original skirting boards, shutters that work and original pieces from the station master’s house.”

The Station House, which the community trust hopes will be open by the end of the summer, will feature a bar and bistro, community space which can be booked for events and meetings, and a cycle hub.
Grace added: “We’re really delighted. Stow is the place to be.”
The community trust is currently seeking a tenant to take on the station house bar/bistro.
