A 35-YEAR-OLD man tried to enter a Borders high school at 2.30am because he wanted some "peace and quiet", Jedburgh Sheriff Court has been told.

Andrew White set off the burglar alarm at Kelso High School and when police searched his backpack they found wire cutters and a hammer.

He pleaded guilty to charge of being found in circumstances which inferred he intended to commit theft.

Depute fiscal Alison Atkins said police officers arrived within 10 minutes of the alarm being activated and found White at the scene.

She added: "He told them the reason for being there was to get some peace and quiet. He said he had tried the door to try and get in for peace and quiet."

Defence lawyer Colin Severin said the accused had an unusual background having been a successful poker player in London but then developed a cocaine habit.

White, who receives £250 a week in Universal Credits, was fined £250 and also another £70 for failing to turn up at court previously. A £30 Victim Surcharge was added.
