Around 1am on Sunday, August 22, officers were called to a report of a large-scale disturbance in The Square, Kelso.
When the officers arrived at the scene there was no trace of the disturbance, however a 16-year-old boy was found to have been assaulted.
He was taken by police to the Borders General Hospital where he was treated for a serious facial injury.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "From our enquiries so far, we believe that there were up to 20 people involved in this disturbance.
