Officers are now trying to trace a small red-coloured vehicle travelling towards Walkerburn in connection with this matter.
Constable John Murray said: "We would urge other motorists who were in the area of the A72 at that time and witnessed what happened, or can help us identify the motorist and vehicle involved, to contact police immediately.
"In particular, if you believe you have any relevant dashcam footage of this incident, then please get in touch."
Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident number 1965 of October 5.
