A RARE helmet has sold for more than £2,000 at the Peebles Auction House.

The Siebe Gorman & Co. coal mine rescue smoke helmet is thought to be from Monktonhall Colliery in Midlothian.

The item was in excellent condition with a clean olive green leather finish.

The mica panels were both intact and free from cracks.

Air would have been supplied through lengthy hoses and provided by the rescue team outwith the mine by means of a foot pump.

Monktonhall was one of the Scottish super pits sunk in the 1950s intended to supply the new generation of power stations.

It was sunk to a depth of 930 meters, making it one of the deepest mines in the country.

In addition, on a successful day at the auction house, a 375 stamped gold charm bracelet sold for £820; a mainly Victorian, Edward VII and early Georgian coin collection sold for £320; a pair of antique red carsphairn granite curling stones sold for £340; an oil on canvas ‘Heading to Market’ by David Cox sold for £3,000; a Laurence Broderick rearing Pegasus bronze statue sold for £560; and an oil on canvas painting by Mary Armour sold for £420.
