BORDERERS have the chance to demonstrate their support for the region to be designated a national park in an online vote.
There are currently two parks - the Cairngorms and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs - and both were created almost 20 years ago.
The term is used to describe an area set aside by a national government for the preservation of the natural environment.
It may be designated for purposes of public recreation and enjoyment or because of its historical or scientific interest. Most of the landscapes and their accompanying plants and animals in a national park are kept in their natural state.
A deal between the SNP and the Scottish Green Party now means that at least one more is likely to be designated by the end of this parliamentary session.
Scots Magazine has for some time supported the idea of more national parks in Scotland and have organised a vote to garner public opinion. It is not binding.
Cheviots and Border Hills was one of seven potential areas suggested several years ago.
The others were Ben Nevis/Glen Coe/Black Mount, Galloway, Coastal and Marine Park, Glen Affric, Wester Ross and Harris.
Voters are asked to click on an icon of Jedburgh Abbey if they would like the Cheviots and Borders Hills to win.
The vote ends on Thursday 13 January 2022 and the winner will be announced on that day.
At this time the region is in second place behind Galloway.
John Mayhew, who ran Scottish Campaign for National Parks, is in no doubt about the value of adding to the existing parks, the Cairngorms and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs.
He said: “They bring real focus, as well as additional resources to help support the area’s natural and cultural heritage.”
