SELKIRK Common Riding Trustees have announced that this year’s event will take place as normal on the second Friday after the first Monday in June which this year falls on the 17th.
The recent easing of Covid restrictions which required the cancellation of Border Common Ridings and Festivals in 2020 and 2021, means that a full programme of events is being planned.
The town boasts one of the largest cavalcade of horses and riders in Europe and usually between 300-400 take part.
The climax of the day involves the town’s Standard Bearer and Crafts and Associations Standard Bearers casting their colours in Selkirk’s Ancient Market Place.
News of the return of the Common Riding was greeted with a hugely positive response online.
Trustees have now placed their customary advertisement seeking applications for the positions of Royal Burgh Standard Bearer and Attendants in connection with the Ridings of the Burgh Marches.
The Standard Bearer must be an unmarried man and if possible a native of Selkirk.
He must have ridden the Burgh Marches at least twice as an Attendant.
The four Attendants must be young men, preferably natives of the town and preference will be given to applicants who have ridden the Marches of the Town’s Land more than once.
Applications should be lodged no later than noon on Saturday 26 February 2022.
