A NUMBER of incidents involving “suspicious doorstep callers” have been reported in a Borders town, according to police.
The men selling goods door to door in Selkirk were claiming to be ex-offenders on a rehabilitation scheme, say officers.
Police – who are “not aware” of any such officially-sanctioned initiative – are urging Borderers to look out for vulnerable neighbours.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We do not recommend engaging with any doorstep cold-callers selling goods or services, please call police on 101 (or 999 in an emergency) to report them.

“From bogus callers to rogue traders, doorstep criminals are cunning, creative, and often very convincing. Anyone can be fooled as these people are professional con artists and tend to target the more vulnerable members of our communities.
“Bogus callers and rogue traders may offer to carry out property repairs or garden maintenance or are selling goods door to door.
“Look out for any vulnerable neighbours potentially being targeted by doorstep callers and always report any suspicious vehicles or callers to us immediately by phoning 101 or 999 in an emergency.
“Note as much detail as possible including descriptions of callers, vehicle type, colour, registration number and direction of travel.”
