GUSTS of up to 70 mph could hit the Borders next week as the Met Office issues a yellow warning for the whole of Scotland.

The Borders is one of the areas expected to be affected by the yellow warning for wind from 6pm on Wednesday (February 16) until 6pm on Thursday.

A period of very strong winds could cause disruption for those travelling on roads or by rail, and there is also a risk of power cuts and injuries from fallen trees and debris.

The warning for next week has a low likelihood and medium impact, according to the Met Office's warning impact matrix.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Very strong westerly winds are expected to develop across western Scotland and northern Northern Ireland later Wednesday and extend eastward to the most of Scotland and northern England overnight into Thursday.

"There is still some uncertainty in the timing and location of the strongest winds but there is the potential for inland wind gusts of 60-70 mph in places.

"Gusts of 80-90 mph are possible around exposed coasts and hills of Scotland.

"Winds are expected to ease, initially across western areas, through Thursday afternoon and evening."
