ON Thursday April 7, 251 probationary constables graduated from the Scottish Police College in Tulliallan Fife.

And according to Police Scotland, 22 of the new recruits will be deployed to work within the Lothians and Scottish Borders area.

During the 11-week course, the constables were all given training in legislation, officer safety, and physical education.

The course was divided into six units relating to: Police and the Community - Evidence - Crime - General Police Duties - Road Policing and Writing Skills.

Probationers are assessed by way of formal examinations and practical exercises. On conclusion of the course, there is a written exam and officers must also pass two mandatory fitness tests.

They will now be deployed operationally with a tutor constable. Their performance is assessed and managed by their tutor and sergeant.

Of the officers graduating this month, 57 per cent were male and 43 per cent female.

The youngest recruit was 18 and the oldest 50.

Divisional Commander for the Lothians and Borders Division Chief Superintendent Catriona Paton welcomed the new officers to the region. She said: “I want to congratulate all the probationers who have just completed their initial training and l look forward to meeting those who are coming to work in Lothian and Borders.

“Policing such a large and diverse territory takes people from all sorts of different backgrounds with a variety of skills and experience.

“Our 22 new officers will be a really positive addition in serving and meeting our local communities through the very busy spring and summer months.”
