A FARMER who was involved in a bust-up with a cyclist has been fined £1,000 at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Michael Dagg, 58, from Kelso, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving and threatening or abusive behaviour on the B6461 Ednam to Eccles road on September 3.

Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, said the potato supplier was driving a lorry at around 6.25pm and came up behind a bicycle.

The lorry pulled out to overtake but was confronted with a red Mercedes coming in the opposite direction which had to take evasive action.

Dagg then continued to sound his horn at the cyclist and flashing his hazard lights and then shouted abuse at him.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick said his client was "appalled" to be in court for the first time at 58 years old.

Sheriff Peter Paterson said Dagg had "made a misjudgement" when overtaking.

He fined him £600 for careless driving and imposed five penalty points on his licence.

Dagg was also fined £400 for threatening or abusive behaviour with a £40 Victim Surcharge also imposed.
