A BORDERS man who admitted assaulting his mother has been told he needs to change his attitude towards women, Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard.

Danny Sharkey, 28, pleaded guilty to repeatedly punching her on the body at a house in McLagan Drive, Hawick, on February 7 last year.

He also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive way to his partner or ex-partner by sending her abusive text messages at a house in Arthur Street, Hawick, on September 3.

Sheriff Peter Paterson told Sharkey that he found it disappointing that he did not feel he needed to engage with the Caledonian Men's Programme and was not prepared to undergo the course.

He said: "You have got to change your attitude towards women radically. You appear to think it is not a good idea."

Instead Sharkey was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work for the assault as an alternative to custody while sentence was deferred for three months for good behaviour on the other offence.
