THE Royal and Ancient Burgh of Selkirk is set to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next month.

The working group behind the bank holiday events have made sure the town marks the occasion with a parade, jubilee party and disco.

Organisers of Party on the Pitch are looking forward to the events on Saturday, June 4.

"We're hoping for a good turnout of children," said Shona Grieve, a member of the working party behind the parade and Party on the Pitch.

Fellow member of the working party Graham Coulson added: "We felt it was important [to put on an event] because we are a Royal and Ancient Burgh.

"And I sometimes think people forget that through history the town's been very loyal to whichever – whether it was the monarchy in Scotland at the time or whatever.

"And through that, for the sacrifices that the townspeople made, that's why there's free land granted to the people in Selkirk.

"It's a once in a lifetime thing, and what an amazing woman to have given that service above all." The town recently held a jubilee duck race, with Billy Edgar's duck coming in first place and Michelle Coulson and Marjory Inglis's ducks taking second and third place respectively.

The jubilee parade on June 4 will leave Mungo Park at 2pm, led by Selkirk Silver Band. Fancy dress, although encouraged, is optional.

The parade will then make its way to Philiphaugh Rugby Club for an afternoon of music, entertainment, and sweet treats and the bar at the rugby club.

'Local royalty' will also make a surprise appearance at the event – but organisers are keeping their identity close to their chest.

The event is set to be a great time for families to enjoy their picnics brought from home and have a fun day celebrating with the community.

In addition to the picnic and party and Philiphaugh, organisers are also providing afternoon teas to any residents who are housebound.

Everyone at Party on the Pitch will then be invited to dance the night away at the disco at Philiphaugh.

Entry to the disco is £5, and schoolchildren go free, however, they must be accompanied by an adult.

The disco will run until midnight.
