TORRENTIAL rain, lightning and hail are set to hit the Borders later this afternoon, officials warn.
According to the Met Office, from 1pm today (Friday, June 24) until 10pm a yellow warning for thunderstorms will be in place for parts of the Borders.
The body which monitors the weather also warns that where there is flooding as a result of the heavy rain or areas with lightning strikes there could be further delays or cancellations of transport services.
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "While many places in the warning area will remain dry, heavy showers and thunderstorms will develop today, becoming most frequent from mid-afternoon and lasting into the evening in places.
"Where these occur they are likely to produce some locally torrential rain with 20-30 mm possible in one or two hours, and will likely be accompanied by hail in a few places."
Parts of the Borders expected to be affected by this warning include Galashiels, Kelso, Melrose, Innerleithen and Selkirk.
