GALA Squash Club coach Rory Stewart has picked up a bronze medal in the Men’s Doubles at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Stewart, playing with partner Greg Lobban beat Malaysian pair Eain Yow NG and Chee Wern YEUN in this morning's final, winning the opening game 11-10 then taking the second game 11-8.
The pair reached the last four following victories over Tayyab Aslam and Nasir Iqbal from Pakistan by 2-1 then Zac Alexander and Ryan Cuskelly from Australia by 2-0 before losing 2-1 to England duo Adrian Walker and Daryl Selby in the round of four.
Afterwards a delighted Rory said: “For the past 18 months we have put a big effort into doubles as well as singles so we are really glad that we are heading back with a medal.
“And a big shout out to all the travelling support. I think there will be a few sore heads I the morning.”
It's been a successful games for Rory who also reached the quarter finals of the men’ singles after defeating Temwa Chileshe from New Zealand 3-1 then England’s Patrick Rooney 3-2 before losing 2-0 to former world number one James Wilstrom.
He also reached the last eight of the Mixed Doubles alongside Georgia Adderley beating Shawn Simpson and Amanda Haywood from Barbados 2-0 then Hollie Naughton and Nick Sachvie from Canada 2-0 before losing 2-0 to Chanithma Sinlay and Shamil Wakeel from Sri Lanka.
