PRIME Minister Liz Truss has resigned.
This morning the Prime Minister has said she will remain in her post until a successor has been found.
In front of Downing Street just after 1.30pm Ms Truss said: "I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party."
On Tuesday (October 18), Borders MP John Lamont, of the Conservatives, said: “I would far rather we all focused on helping people with their mortgages and bills than we turned inward and went through another lengthy leadership campaign.”
Reacting to the news of the Prime Minister's resignation today, however, the MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, said: "The Prime Minister has made the right choice.
"I wish her well.
"For the good of the country, we must now unite quickly around the best person to restore stability and win back voter trust."
