TWEEDDALE'S MP has reacted to today's news that Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister.
On Thursday afternoon Ms Truss said she "cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party".
Responding to the news, Tweeddale MP David Mundell, of the Conservatives, said: “The circumstances that developed over the last few weeks were clearly not sustainable and it is right that they have been brought to an end.
“The overriding priorities must now be to continue the work to provide confidence and stability to the markets and to stabilise the mortgages of families across the UK, while continuing to provide support to ordinary households, such as direct help with energy bills, over what will undoubtedly be difficult months ahead.
"I will be assessing any candidates for Prime Minister against those criteria and cast my vote accordingly.”
Speaking in front of Downing Street yesterday afternoon, the Prime Minister said: "I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.
"I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.
"This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady. We've agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week.
"This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country's economic stability and national security. I will remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen."
Liz Truss's resignation comes three weeks after she and former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng launched their 'mini-budget' and only six weeks into her premiership – making her the shortest-serving Prime Minister.
