THE South of Scotland Challenge Cup kicked off last Saturday (October 22) with a number of Borders teams in action.
Hawick Legion beat Hawick Colts 3-2 in the Hawick derby at the town’s Wilton Lodge Park. Ben Murdoch, Jason Inglis and Finnen Gordon-Woolley scored for Legion with Nathan Gillie scoring both of Hawick Colts’ goals.
Selkirk Victoria lost to Greenlaw 7-0 at home. Greenlaw’s scorers were William Smillie with a hat-trick and Kevin Wemyss with a double, plus Liam Demarco and Ross Smillie.
Earlston Rhymers beat Coldstream Amateurs 6-2 at Runciman Park with goals from Ben Dickson, Danny Simpson, Jack Bell, Scott Rice, Sam Pattinson and Jimmy Bell.
Chirnside United beat Avendale 5-3 at home and their scorers were Daniel Pattenden and Robert Reid with two each and Liam Snowball. Avendale’s scorers being Peter Ferguson, Dani Caricato and Scott McWee.
Also knocked out at the weekend were Hawick Waverley and St Boswells.
Hawick Waverley lost 4-2 at home to East Lothian’s Longniddry Villa.
Waverley’s scorers were Evan Alexander and Jordan Yardley, with Liam Currie, Ryan Flanagan twice and captain Craig McDonald netting in the opposite direction.
St Boswells lost at home, to Lanark’s Kirkfield United 4-3 in a penalty shootout after ending up tied at 2-2 following extra time. On target for St Boswells were Connor Shepherd and Kai Macrae.
Elsewhere Berwick Colts lost 6-0 at North Berwick, Biggar United won 3-2 at Penicuik Amateurs and Carluke Thistle beat Loanhead 4-0
A total of 22 teams were given a bye. These teams were Ancrum, Danderhall Miners AFC, Dunbar Athletic, Eyemouth United, Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs, Gala Hotspur, Hawick United, Jed Legion, Kelso Thistle, Langholm Legion, Langlee Amateurs, Lauder, Law Community AFC, Leithen Rovers, Lesmahagow, Linton Hotspur, Musselburgh Windsor, Newtown, Pencaitland, Stow and Tweeddale Rovers.
The second round will take place on November 26 2022.
