MORE than 11,000 families across the Borders will now receive government support for the cost-of-living crisis.
From today (Tuesday, November 8) the UK Government will begin issuing Borderers and families across the UK with a second support payment of £324 as part of a scheme to help people pay their bills during the financial crisis.
Borders MP John Lamont, of the Conservatives, says these latest payments are "very welcome".
He said: “These crucial payments from the UK Government will be very welcome news for more than 11,000 families across the Scottish Borders.
“They will be worth hundreds of pounds to each family, providing essential help at this time of crisis and hardship.
“This support package will help ease the burden for the most vulnerable this winter.
“There are no easy solutions to the global economic crisis, as we pay the price of the COVID pandemic and spiralling inflation caused by Russia’s appalling war in Ukraine.
“It is a very difficult time but I know the UK Government is determined to act decisively and deliver vital help with the cost-of-living crisis to people in the Scottish Borders."
In addition to this month's payment of £324, households previously received a support payment of £326 earlier this year, there is also the £400 energy bill support payment which is being made in instalments, the £150 disability payment and the £300 winter fuel payment for pensioners.
The £324 payment is made directly to eligible recipients who receive certain benefits, with no need to apply.
