WEST Linton’s Whipman Play Society held its first ever Kids Ride in the lead up to this weekend’s celebrations.
Whipman Week officially begins today (June 2) with the installation and float parade before tomorrow’s main ride out.
But the youngest riders in the town had the chance to show off their skills and join in the village’s tradition in a brand new event on Sunday (May 28).
Led by this year’s principals, 27 children rode out from Howieson Hall and were cheered as they forded the splash.
A Whipman spokesperson said: “The ride left from Howieson Hall at 10am led by Left Hand Support, Guy and Delia Thorley; retiring Whipman and Lass, Gregor Brown and Lucy Martin; and Whipman and Lass Elect for 2023, Fraser and Vikki Kay, with 27 children following them on and fording the splash at the White Bridge on the Lower Green with a roaring crowd to cheer them on.
“The children then made their way to Slipperfield for the lunch stop.”
During the break, Presenting Lady Sheila Forsyth judged and announced the best turned out pony and rider and best local rider.
Leah Lambie won best turned out pony and rider and Heather Simmons was named as best local rider.
The spokesperson added: “The Whipman Play Society would like to thank 2011 Whipman Bobby Dow and his wife Tracy for organising such a fantastic day for the kids.
“Massive well done to all children who took part, they all looked fantastic and rode their ponies wonderfully.
“The society would like to extend this thank you to everyone who supported on Sunday and we look forward to the Kids Ride returning in 2024.
“Whipman Week officially starts on Friday (June 2) with the Installation of the Whipman and Lass for 2023, Fraser and Vikki Kay.
“The Whipman Play Society looks forward to welcoming everyone to the Green at Linton.”
