ROAD Safety Scotland have launched their 2023 National Seatbelt campaign.
Not wearing a seatbelt can have big consequences. Your friends’ and family’s lives could all be affected. So, don’t ever skip it – even for short journeys.
If you are caught not wearing a seatbelt you could be fined up to £500.
A driver can also be fined for every child under 14 found not properly restrained.
On average 13%* of those killed on roads in Scotland over the last five years were not wearing a seatbelt.
Wearing a seatbelt reduces both fatal and non-fatal injuries by 60% among front seat passengers.
Wearing a seatbelt reduces both fatal and non-fatal injuries by 44% among rear seat passengers.
Only 75% of drivers considered not wearing a seatbelt as ‘very serious’, well below the 93% who consider drink driving and drug driving to be ‘very serious’.
Chief Superintendent Hilary Sloan, Head of Road Policing, shares the importance of the campaign: "It’s not just you who can get hurt. Your friends’ and family’s lives could all be affected. Even for short journeys, don’t ignore it."
