NHS BORDERS is urging people in the region who are currently experiencing long waits for appointments, treatment, and operations to avoid calling their GP as they are not in a position to provide updates or speed up the process.

Staff say that should the condition worsen then the hospital clinician should be notified by calling the number on the appointment letter.

Associate Medical Director of Primary and Community Services Tim Young said: “We understand that it can be frustrating for patients that are currently on waiting lists for knee surgery, hip surgery or any other procedure.

“Currently general practice is receiving a lot of calls from concerned patients.

“Unfortunately general practice currently cannot expedite appointments and are unable to field concerns about appointment times.

“All these appointment times are available on NHS Borders website.

“We also understand that patients can deteriorate whilst they are on waiting lists.

“And I think that it is important that these patients contact the clinician on their contact letter.”
