YOUTHBORDERS has announced the expansion of the Scottish Borders Youth Local Action Group (Youth LAG) project into its second year.

Building upon the success of the 2022 initiative, YouthBorders is on a mission to invite more young changemakers into the fold and is recruiting young people to help reshape the landscape of economic and community development in the Scottish Borders.

Youth LAG has already ignited a spark within a core group of dynamic young leaders.

Over the past year, they've honed their grant-making skills and gained valuable experience in driving positive impact.

YouthBorders are now extending an invitation to ambitious young individuals, aged 14 to 25, who aspire to make a tangible difference in their communities.

Joining Youth LAG offers a chance to learn new skills, boost confidence, and collaborate with like-minded peers who share the goal of creating meaningful change in the Scottish Borders.

"Being part of the Youth LAG is an incredible journey," said Sean who joined the team last year. "Over the past twelve months, I've helped decide which groups and individuals gained a share of our grant pot of £20k, like Alexander Mathieson’s pop-up Eco Refill Station in Duns.

“It was hard because there were so many brilliant ideas put forward by young people across the region. The responsibility of choosing grant recipients was a big deal, but it felt great knowing we're making a real difference."

Lucy is another original member. "Youth LAG is about expanding your horizons," she said. "Last year we went to Orkney to meet other grant makers from Scotland’s Youth LAG network. It was an amazing experience. Youth LAG isn't just about creating change for others; it's about growing as a leader, enjoying new friendships and making a big impact. I'd encourage any young person to get involved – it's a great opportunity!"

"We are excited to continue the Youth LAG journey," announced Julia Partington, YouthBorders Chief Officer. "This project empowers young leaders to steer the direction of the new fund, making decisions that will impact individual young people and community

projects across the Borders. It's a unique voluntary opportunity that fosters employability skills, connections, and confidence."

Interested young people must live, work or study in the Scottish Borders and be aged between 14 and 25 years of age.

YouthBorders is keen to encourage those from a range of backgrounds to apply. Additional support is available to help sustain involvement in the project such as help with travel costs. Previous experience of volunteering or participation in leadership projects is not essential.

What is most important is energy, drive, and enthusiasm to create change. Places are limited and early statements of interest are encouraged.

Scottish Borders Youth LAG group will meet from September to develop its vision and priorities for the Scottish Borders before the grant fund opens in December 2023. The deadline for expressions of interest is Monday 18 September 2023.
