IT’S been a busy few days for the Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue volunteers.

On Monday (October 9 2023) morning the team was called out to assist Police Scotland officers to search for a missing 82-year-old man near Whitburn and Heartlands in West Lothian.

The man had been missing since Friday night and there were significant concerns for his welfare.

Water levels were high and ground flooded, making searching difficult and dangerous in places.

And as the search teams were completing the last of their search areas, the missing man was located alive by a TVMRT member.

A TVMRT spokesperson said: “We are incredibly relieved that the casualty was found, after close to 60 hours outdoors in some extremely challenging weather. We wish them well in their recovery.

“All members are unpaid volunteers and balancing callouts with family and work can be difficult especially on busy weeks such as this.

“We’d really like to thank our families and employers for their support and patience, without which the team would not be able to operate.”

Then the following day,(Tuesday October 10 2023)  the team assisted the Scottish Ambulance Service rescue a young mountain biker who had sustained injuries following a crash on the Glentress trails.

The casualty was evacuated by stretcher to a waiting ambulance and the injured party was taken to hospital in Edinburgh.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 16:11 on Tuesday 10 October 2023 to attend an incident at Glentress Forest.

“Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene and one patient was transported to Royal Edinburgh Hospital.”

Then just as the Team were tidying up from the first callout, a second callout came in and the team attended Blackford Hill in Edinburgh where working alongside the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service, they assisted in rescuing a teenager who had fallen from a significant height.
