TWO new Borders cycling routes have been mapped in a bid to capitalise on the legacy of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.
Glentress hosted a number of races during the world’s biggest cycling event which took place across 11 days in August.
Tourism organisation VisitScotland has teamed up with charity Sustrans Scotland to add three ‘legacy routes’ to its cycling map, which generated more than 250,000 page views last year.
The Glentress Nature Route is a 15-mile figure-of-eight that takes in the forest and the picturesque surroundings of Peebles.
Meanwhile, the 19-mile Tweed Valley Loop starts in Innerleithen and ambles through the scenic Tweed Valley and alongside the River Tweed.
The Glenkiln Route, from The Crichton in Dumfries, is a gentle loop through the countryside.
VisitScotland destination development director Gordon Smith said: “The UCI Cycling World Championships was a truly unique event – the first of its kind in the world that showcased Scotland and its cycling offer to TV audiences across the world.
“We want to build on the momentum and continue to position Scotland as a leading destination for cycling tourism. The addition of these new cycling routes will ensure that more people consider cycling as part of a holiday.
“The south of Scotland has a strong association with cycling. It is the birthplace of the bike and with its abundance of mountain biking trails, 7stanes mountain biking centres and road and gravel biking routes, it is an ideal destination for cyclists whatever their ability.”
Two new routes in Glasgow and Stirling have also been added to the map which now includes eight long-distance journey suggestions and 66 day trip options.
VisitScotland’s website offers cycling content to inspire potential visitors.
Cosmo Blake, principal network development manager for engagement at Sustrans Scotland, said: “The Championships set out to inspire more people to experience cycling across the country, encourage active travel and reduce carbon emissions.
“By leaving our cars at home more often, we can reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality in our neighbourhoods, and promote healthier spaces where we can all thrive.”
Trudy Lindblade, chief executive officer of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, added: “We are delighted with the announcement of three new day-trip cycle routes for the south of Scotland, a proud host region of the Championship. These routes form part of the event’s ‘inspired by’ legacy programme demonstrating the power of the bike.
“The creation of the routes provides more options for locals and visitors to get on their bikes and experience the freedom it brings, reduce their impact on the environment and demonstrates that Scotland is made for cycling.”
