POLICE officers in the Scottish Borders are continuing to target speeding drivers in the region. 

This week community officers carried out speed checks at Eyemouth, Whitsome and Chirnside with three people warned regarding their speed.

Last week community officers carried out speed checks in Westruther, Gordon, Heiton and Denholm.

 Numerous drivers were stopped and advised on speed and other winter driving issues.

Earlier this month officers out carried speed checks on the A6105 road in Duns in response to community concerns about speeding past the schools.

This resulted in a number of warnings being issued and enforcement action in the form of speeding tickets.

In the past few weeks officers in the Borders have carried out speed checks near Newlands Primary School, Romanno Bridge, Skirling, and Broughton Primary School, where the local Junior Road Safety Officers assisted.

Similar activity took place at Peebles, Langlee, Earlston, Allanton, Coldingham, Westruther, Gavinton and Foulden, Reston and Clockmill, Duns and Ayton.

Officers say that every year in Scotland there are too many fatal accidents caused by speeding.

Latest figures show excessive speed was reported as a contributory factor in 21% of fatal accidents.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Please be aware of your speed, especially in the 20's where there are more vulnerable road users.”
