Moorfoot Runners: Craig Angus Merit Award launched

Junior Moorfoot Runners member Craig Angus passed away last summer at the age of 20.

The club has launched a new annual prize – the Craig Angus Merit Award – to commemorate his memory.

The award, which is supported by Craig’s parents Colin and Susan, not only recognises the athletic achievements of junior athletes, it also celebrates the attributes they share with Craig – a good work ethic, respect for others, politeness, modesty, an uncomplaining attitude, dedication, courage, enjoyment, and setting a good example as a member of the Moorfoot team.

Colin Angus said: “This award shows how much Craig was appreciated and it’s a lovely way to keep his memory alive.

“It’s obvious from how people have reacted since Craig’s death that they thought really highly of him.”

Craig competed for Moorfoot Runners from 2013-2018, starting with the under 13s until he was in the under 17s group.

On Friday (January 5) Moorfoot Runners held a presentation ceremony at Franco’s restaurant in Peebles – where Craig worked with his dad – to announce the award’s first winner.

The “very deserving” 2023 winner of the Craig Angus Merit Award is 16 year-old Sabine Jefcoate from West Linton.

Moorfoot coach Gregor Nicholson said: “Craig was a real trier whose quiet dedicated manner meant he was a shining example to younger athletes.

“Sabine reminds me a lot of Craig. She gives her all in training and although rarely a race winner, she has had the courage to compete in cross-country, on the track, on the Borders Games circuit and most recently in a trail half marathon.

“She clearly enjoys her participation in the sport and is most definitely a shining example to the younger juniors with her work ethic and polite and respectful manner.

“She is a very deserving first winner of the Craig Angus Merit Award.”
