The postcode in Scotland named among the 'coolest' in the UK

The list, which was compiled by The Sunday Times, included places in the far north of Scotland as well as spots in the heart of London.

The publication was able to identify the country's "hottest neighbourhoods" by speaking to regional and national experts.

IV27 (Tongue) in Scotland's Highland region was among the 10 "coolest" places to live in the UK with The Sunday Times praising the area's range of outdoor activities and rich history.

The publication said: "If you want to get as far away as possible, enter Tongue into Google Maps and head north. This tiny village on the north coast of Scotland is as off-grid as you can get without leaving the mainland, and the coastal roads leading there are Scotland’s answer to Route 66.

"Lundies House, an elegant hotel owned by the conservationist Anders Povlsen, is the place to know if you want to explore the surroundings, and the rangers here can organise activities such as paddleboarding or guided walks.

"Or try a “floral wellness” retreat by the conservation project Wildland at Kinloch, a former shooting lodge. The next one is in March and will help guests “rewild their inner creative” through classes in botanical dyeing and landscape sculpture.

"There is history here too. Walk to Castle Varrich, which has thousand-year-old ruins, then head to Tongue Hotel for a locally sourced supper.

"Wilderness nerds should tick off Skinnet Beach and the sandy dunes of Skerray Beach to watch surfers braving the icy water."

The Portobello Pocket in Edinburgh was also ranked among the UK's best "micro-neighbourhoods" thanks to its two-mile-long coastline and gorgeous Georgian terraces.

The paper said: "Nestled between greenery and two miles of coastline, Portobello, aka Porty, is one of Edinburgh’s trendiest pocket suburbs.

"Must-visits include MatchaMind, Scotland’s first matcha bar, where you can have a session with a massage therapist while you wait for your Ocean Blend Mer-Matcha.

"To bring your newfound zen into the home, Holly Grows is Porty’s plant specialist stocking tropical species and soil blends, while avid readers make for Tills Bookshop to browse second-hand volumes.

"A walk past Georgian terraces and you’ll hit the seafront. Here, the Beach House bakery and garden is the go-to for local produce or, for a taste of the ocean, ShrimpWreck’s seafood menu has classic fish finger sarnies (plus branded T-shirts on the side)."
