IN an effort to help residents protect themselves again scammers, the 'Scan Van' will tour the Borders next week.

The Trading Standards Scam Van will visit five towns across the Borders next week as part of an initiative organised by Scottish Borders Council's (SBC) Trading Standards department.

Between May 20-24 the scam van will visit towns to share information on how locals can spot potential scams and how they can make informed decisions when facing cold callers.

The scam van is the latest addition to the council's Trusted Trader Scheme which it launched in June 2023.

Councillor Julie Pirone, Executive Member for Communities and Culture, said: “I am delighted that we are empowering local people to take action against scammers and protect themselves through the launch of the Scam Van Tour.

“This a great opportunity for everyone, no matter their age, to gain the knowledge and tools needed to protect ourselves against scammers and fraud which sadly is on the increase. If you know what to do, then it makes it easier to protect yourself and members of your family.

“Working together with our local communities and other key partners, we hope that together we can continue to raise awareness and champion the rights of consumers.”


The Scam Van will at the following locations:

  • Monday, May 20, 10am-3pm  – Tesco, Galashiels
  • Tuesday, May 21, 10am-3pm – Morrisons, Hawick
  • Wednesday, May 22, 10am-3pm – Mayfield Garden Centre, Kelso
  • Thursday, May 23, 10am-3pm  – Milestone Garden Centre, Newtown St Boswells
  • Friday, May 24, 10am-12.30pm – Station Car Park, Peebles

Residents visiting the scam van at one of its five locations will have the chance to  meet with members of the SBC Trading Standards team who can offer guidance on how to identify and combat fraud attempts. The team will also highlight where people can access advice and assistance.

Eligible residents will have the opportunity to learn about True Call Blockers which can be installed free of charge to deter unwanted scam calls.
