PUPILS at a Galashiels school will be seeking to emulate their Olympic idols next month thanks to a generous donation from a local retailer.
The Burgh Primary was named as one of the lucky winners of Spar UK’s Sports Day Awards.
The company is giving away £50,000 in support of sports days across schools in the UK.
This scheme gave schools the chance to apply for £200 grants to buy new equipment.
And parents from Burgh Primary applied and were delighted to be told by staff at Spar’s Marigold Bank store that they had been successful.
Lisa Jeffrey, from Burgh’s parent/carer council, said: "This is a wonderful donation from Spar and will help us give the children a sports day to remember.
"It’s always a special occasion for the school and we have a lot of pupils with talent when it comes to sport.
"We can use the donation to replenish some of our equipment which can then be used right across the year.
"We also want all the kids to know the importance of taking part and along with the donation we have been given promotional material and medals to hand out to those competing.
"We’d like to thank Karen and Gillian from the Gala store for arranging all this and it’s a reminder that local shops always want to support local people."
The school will use the donation to purchase new equipment in time for their event on June 18.
Spar will also provide medals, athlete tags, banners and water to help make the day feel even more special for the children.
