SCOTTISH Borders Council is flying the Armed Forces Day flag at its headquarters in Newtown St Boswells this week.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the service of men and women in the Forces.

And this year it takes place on Saturday, June 29.

The flag was raised at a ceremony in Newtown today (Monday) by Keith Harris, Six SCOTS Army Reserve; and Joshua Bolton, Lothian and Borders Army Cadet Force; with support from Pipe Major (Retired), Robert Bell.

Also present were Russell Kirk, Coldstream Royal British Legion; Jeanna Swan, Lord-Lieutenant: Berwickshire and veterans' charities currently active in the Borders.

Councillor John Greenwell, champion for armed forces and veterans, said: "I am delighted that Scottish Borders Council is once again supporting Armed Forces Day, taking the opportunity to acknowledge the vitally important contribution made by everyone who is part of the military community, from our currently serving troops to the reservists, veterans, cadets and of course the families who support them.

"The support shown by our local communities throughout this week is also appreciated, as we come together in recognising the efforts of all those who work so hard to maintain the safety and security of our nation."
