A HAWICK man under the influence of drugs who caused a disturbance in a local mill retail shop and then tried to headbutt a police officer has been ordered to pay more than £500 at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.
Forty-nine-year-old Roy Storey pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at the Hawico Visitor Centre and Retail Shop in Arthur Street on the afternoon of September 18 last year.
Prosecutor Drew Long said Storey entered the shop around 1pm and a member of staff described how he began losing his temper and throwing items, such as cones and fabrics, around the shop.
He added Storey was wanting a member of staff to go with him to the gym but continued running about the shop throwing things which frightened the staff.
Mr Long said two staff members forcibly moved him from the shop and locked the doors and called police.
Officers arrived on the scene and quickly established Storey was responsible and traced him to his home in nearby Earl Street.
Storey was described as intoxicated and as officers tried to arrest him he became aggressive and attempted to headbutt a constable.
He had to be taken to Borders General Hospital for an assessment.
Defence lawyer Mat Patrick described his client’s behaviour as “bizarre”.
He said Storey was having a psychotic episode and accepted he had consumed a drug but did not know what it was.
But Mr Patrick pointed out Storey had not consumed any drugs since and had not been in any trouble for the past 10 months.
Storey was fined £270 for his behaviour inside the shop and £225 for the police assault, with a £20 victim surcharge added.
Not guilty pleas to charges of theft and threatening behaviour were accepted by the Crown before a trial was due to get under way on Tuesday.
