A BORDERS visitor attraction has been dubbed a 'traveller favourite' by a world renowned travel site.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels was recognised by Tripadvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards 2024.

To be recognised by the awards an attraction has to be ranked in the top 10 per cent of listings around the world on the site.

On receiving the 'prestigious' award recognition, tapestry centre director Sandy Maxwell-Forbes said: "We are honoured to be included among travellers' favourites this year and I would like to thank all our visitors whom we have warmly welcomed travelling from around the world to visit and extend my gratitude to those who have shared their enjoyment and appreciation.

"The accolade from Tripadvisor reflects the tapestry's status as a beloved attraction among travellers, ensuring its legacy for future generations and highlights its significant cultural impact and appeal."

To be placed in the top 10 per cent of listings an attraction relies on authentic reviews left on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period.

Ms Maxwell-Forbes added: "The tapestry is an outstanding historical, cultural and artistic national treasure which tells a visually compelling account of the people’s story of Scotland and its appeal enchants its many visitors from around the world, as this award testifies."

One review from a visitor from Canada reads: "This was amazing, the history seemed to come alive.

"I wasn’t sure what to expect, the tapestry was phenomenal.

"This was a thought-provoking visit, so many parts of history to see, you can’t fail to be in awe of the way history is brought to life in thread."

The £6.8 million centre opened its doors in 2021 and is home to 160 hand-stitched panels.

Council leader Euan Jardine recently admitted there was “work to do” to make the Galashiels attraction a success.

New figures show that Scottish Borders Council has underwritten around £440,000 in losses during the hub’s first two full years.

It is also attracting less than half its predicted footfall.

Mr Jardine defended the centre, adding: “I challenge anyone who is criticising the centre to go into this magnificent building and have a look at the tapestry panels."

Chief growth officer at Tripadvisor John Boris said: "Congratulations to the Great Tapestry of Scotland on its recognition in Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2024.

"Travellers’ Choice honours businesses that consistently demonstrate a commitment to hospitality excellence.

"This means you have made such a memorable impact on your visitors that many of them took the time to go online and leave a great review about their experience.

"People rely on Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice seal to help them navigate the myriad of things to see, eat and do across the globe.

"We hope this recognition continues to drive business to you in 2024 and beyond."
