CORNET Ryan Murray says the atmosphere in Lauder during this year’s Common Riding was “phenomenal”.
The 31-year-old led the town’s summer celebrations in 2024, culminating in the ride out on a beautiful Saturday (August 3).
Lauder is steeped in Common Riding tradition, with references to the festival dating back to the 1600s.
And Ryan was bursting with pride during his stint as Cornet.
“Saturday was one of the best days of my life,” he said. “I was given a very important job and felt everything just fell into place perfectly.
“Everyone in Lauder was in amazing spirits.
“The cheers from the crowds, everyone was smiling and having a good time. It was phenomenal. The highlight of my day was standing on the stage after returning the burgh standard knowing I had completed my job successfully.”
And he has a handy tip for his successor.
“My advice to the next Cornet would be take it all in and enjoy every minute because it’s true what everyone says, it’s over in a flash.”
Following a rollercoaster of a summer, Ryan added: “A small message to the people of Lauder – thank you all for your support and guidance. It was an honour and privilege to represent the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Lauder in this year’s Common Riding.”
