BORDERS walkers have been urged to be aware of heat exhaustion after a father and son had to be rescued.
Border Search and Rescue Unit (BSARU) was called out by police on Sunday afternoon to help the duo in the Cheviot hills.
The father and son, who had been out overnight, both became unwell.
A BSARU spokesperson said: “The casualties, a father and son, had been out overnight and in Sunday's heat, now without water, found themselves in trouble far from safety.
“The father succumbed to heat exhaustion and became quite ill. The son did well in difficult circumstances, calling 999 for police and mountain rescue. Soon after, the son also became ill from this often underestimated condition.”
They added: “Heat exhaustion victims can deteriorate quickly, necessitating sufficient kit and experienced personnel nearby.
“The casualties were sheltered, assessed and given nourishment, improving their condition. They were then helped to vehicles and driven off the hill while the team departed in remaining vehicles and on foot.
“Be aware of the heat's impact in the hills - prepare, pace yourself, take enough water, and make right decisions.”
Two passing walkers were commended for helping the duo.
