MOTORISTS have been warned they face months of disruption as part of a ‘major’ project on a Borders bridge.

Bearings on the A68 Earlston Bridge, spanning Leader Water, will be refurbished and replaced.

The work is set to begin on Monday (August 19), lasting until Friday.

During that time a lane will be closed across the bridge and temporary traffic lights in place between 9.30am and 4pm.

Work will then resume in mid October, with a lane closure and temporary lights in operation until February.

Overnight closures of the A68 south of Earlston will also be required during the project, according to road officials.

Those details have yet to be confirmed.

Dave Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s south east unit bridges manager, said: “The bearings on Earlston Bridge are nearing the end of their service life and need to be replaced.

“We’ve planned the works to cause as little disruption as possible, however lane closures and some overnight road closures will be required. We’ll keep the public updated as soon as further details are confirmed.”

The bridge will be open to pedestrians during the lane closures, with footpath diversions in place.

No traffic management will be required from August 24 to October 13 work will be going on underneath the bridge.

Myra’s Snack Hut, usually found in the layby to the south of the bridge, has been temporarily moved to the layby around 400m further south.
