A MOTION supporting calls for a U-turn on a decision to cut winter fuel payments for older people is to be considered by Scottish Borders Council this week.
Plans to means-test Winter Fuel Payment in England and Wales will see the Scottish Government’s funding cut by up to £160 million.
The Scottish Government said last month they were left with “no choice” but to end universal payments following the funding cut.
At a full council meeting on Thursday (September 26) SBC council leader Euan Jardine will be urged to write to the UK and Scottish governments to highlight the “detrimental consequences these cuts will have on residents in the Scottish Borders”.
The motion, submitted by East Berwickshire independent councillor James Anderson, states: “Older people already face significant challenges, and the reduction of winter fuel allowance will exacerbate their struggles, leading to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures and increasing financial strain.
“Many older residents rely on these payments to keep their homes warm during harsh winter months; without this support, we risk condemning them to a sad reality of discomfort and financial insecurity.
“Ignoring the needs of our older people will have serious repercussions for our communities, and we must advocate fiercely for their rights.”
