SELKIRK Cricket Club is literally a step closer to purchasing new pitch covers for its Philiphaugh ground, thanks to the hill-walking exploits of five dedicated supporters.
Last Tuesday, Selkirk 1st XI vice-captain Kenny Paterson - along with team-mates Blaine Gillie, Ian Gardiner and friends Gordon Douglas and Iain Minto - successfully completed the West Highland Way, Scotland’s most popular long distance walking route.
Thanks to generous sponsorship from family, friends and club members, the walk is expected to raise around £2,600, significantly boosting the fund set up by the Selkirk club to buy new pitch covers.
“It was a great experience,” said organiser Kenny Paterson, whose Briard dog ‘Rebel’ also accompanied the group on their five-day trek.
“Conditions on the first two days were pretty challenging, but from then on the weather couldn’t have been better.
“Apart from all the amazing views along the way, another highlight was the camaraderie and spirit that developed amongst the boys, with everyone supporting each other.
“We’re incredibly grateful for all the sponsorship we’ve received, and when the group finally reached Fort William everyone was on a definite high.
"Things honestly couldn’t have gone better.”
