TORRENTIAL rain failed to stop Bonnie Peebles crocus champions from planting 14,000 bulbs.

Margaret Wightman, who led the group, said that at 8am on Sunday morning the weather looked quite bright.

But by 9am, when the planting started outside the Eastgate car park, Storm Ashley had arrived with high winds and lashings of rain.

Alan Corson and Annie Vinyard joined Stuart Wightman and Douglas Miller and they were helped by three members of Peeblesshire Junior Agricultural Club: Emma Gray, Abbie Barber and Erin Greenhow.

Ms Wightman said: “We are very grateful to the girls for giving up their time.

“Hopefully the bulbs will create a lovely display in the spring which will last for many years.”
