VOLUNTEER staff have raised more than £1,000 for charity at a quiz night.

Jennie Jacobs came up with the idea to help support the Peebles branch of national charity Save the Children.

And the group smashed their £800 target at the event last Friday at the town’s golf club.

Shop manager Elizabeth O’Raw said: “We couldn’t be more delighted and would definitely consider running a quiz again.

“We had hoped to reach £800 but to smash that target and raise £1,011.67 is phenomenal.

“Many town businesses and some from Edinburgh donated prizes, both for the quiz and raffle.

“We could not have done it without their generosity.

“More than 70 people attended the event and had a great evening.

“With Pat Harris as quiz master for the evening, nothing was going to go wrong.

“The volunteers all played a big part in pulling it off and without them it wouldn’t have been possible.

“One thousand pounds could pay for 20 baby feeding kits in our current Middle East appeal containing bottles with teats, brushes to clean the bottles, sterilising equipment, feeding cups, food containers, a ceramic cooking pot, a single burner camping stove, and water sanitation tabs.”

Ms O’Raw added that Save the Children runs on its volunteers and every minute they are in the shop makes a difference to a child or young person’s life both here in the UK and globally.

She said: “If you have ever wondered what it would be like to volunteer in an environment where you can have fun, make decisions and make a difference then pop into the shop on Peebles High Street, call 01721 720586 or see www.savethechildren.org.uk.”
