AN OLYMPIC hero and local legends have been honoured at ClubSport Ettrick and Lauderdale's annual awards ceremony.

The event was held on Friday, October 25, at Galashiels Rugby Club.

Richard Kenney OBE, chair of ClubSport Ettrick and Lauderdale, welcomed 80 athletes coaches and organisers from sports clubs across the region.

A spokesperson said: "Many of the clubs, athletes and coaches attending the awards had been previous recipients of grant aid from the ClubSport organisation, including Olympian Sarah Robertson who has had a long history of sport in the region's clubs and athlete support programmes."

David Ormiston, star of Galashiels Cricket Club, was recognised for more than 50 years of service to sport with the Scottish Clubsport Service to Local Sport Award.

Daniel Porter, of Galashiels, received the Disability Sports Award – sponsored by the Rowan Boland Memorial Trust – the after having a standout season bowling for the town's club and Scotland.

Gillian Todd, from Border Barracudas and Team Borders, was given the Special Award for Service to Disability Sports.

Other winners on the night were Galashiels squash and racketball club Border Reivers as Team of the Year. Squash is a minority sport in the region with just one squash club attracting members from across the Borders. However, this spread of talent has seen the Reivers progress through the south of Scotland’s leagues.

Sticking with Galashiels based athletes, Lili Mundell, a young swimmer from Gala Amateur Swimming Club and Heart of Midlothian Swimming Club, became the Junior Sports Personality of the Year.

Junior Coach of the Year Callum Simpson, from Earlston Tennis Club, was honoured for his dedication, not only to his local club, but in assisting sides across the Borders.

Gerry Moss, of Gala Harriers Athletics Club, picked up the Coach of the Year prize, while golf outfit Torwoodlee Juniors received the Club of the Year title.

Rounding off the awards for the evening was the Sports Personality of the Year award.

A ClubSport Ettrick and Lauderdale spokesperson said: "This year the award could only go to Olympic hockey star Sarah Robertson who this summer competed in her second Olympics for Team GB."
