A Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is celebrating 50 years of helping people in the community.

Roxburgh and Berwickshire CAB, which offers free, confidential, and independent advice, has been in service since 1974.

The charity marked its half-century milestone with a small event where staff, volunteers, and trustees gathered to cut a celebratory cake.

Marshall Wilson, chairman of the board of trustees, said: "It is hard to imagine that we are celebrating 50 years of providing a service in this area.

"We owe a big debt of gratitude to the volunteers and staff who worked with us in the 50 years.

"This is Trustee Week across Scotland, and my thanks also go out to all the trustees who have given freely of their time and varied talents since our inception.

"It is also heartwarming so many members of staff and volunteers stay with us for many years and it is a key to the bureau's success."

Bridie Ashrowan, chief officer, explained the type of issues the CAB has dealt with over the years.

She said: "The main cases we’ve seen over the years are financial: debt, benefits, or people just unable to pay their bills.

"But we also see a lot of legal situations, such as discrimination, or disputes with landlords or employers.

"Then there are consumer issues like scams, or compensation claims.

"We have seen an increase in concerns about costs of energy and cost of living, the risk of homelessness and debt."

Acknowledging the broad range of assistance the CAB can provide, Ms Ashrowan encouraged anyone in need to reach out for help.

She also highlighted the ongoing need for new trustees and volunteers to join the team.

Simon Rennie, chairman of Citizens Advice Scotland, extended his congratulations to the Roxburgh and Berwickshire CAB.

He said: "Warm congratulations to Bridie and all the team.

"They are an exemplary CAB and a key part of our network.

"50 years is quite something.

"I’m sure there are many in the local community there who have positive memories of how the CAB made a difference in their lives.

"And I know the team will continue to offer the best advice service going forward."
